Fungi are in biology one of the 4 kingdoms of multi-celled based life. It is difficult to define exactly which organisms are fungi, as they are and are neither plants nor animals. For example:

  • animallike properties: they eat, but digest (have digested) their food outside their body
  • plantlike properties: they propagate with spores; their cellwands are hard, but made of chitine rather than cellulose
  • nonlike properties: they do not have a compact body, but grow threadlike shapes, (mycelium).
