The Sāmoan warriors were victorious in their independence war against Tonga. It was this Tuʻi Tonga they defeated. During his fleeing away from the final battleground at Tualatala in Sāmoa, Talakaifaiki (Talaʻifeiʻi in Sāmoan) is reported to have said from aboard his canoe:

Brave warriors, bravely fought
whenever I shall come back
it shall be a friendly return
and not a tide of war!
