Other versions
This award image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “Graphic Designer Barnstar Hires.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.

The Graphic Designer's Barnstar is meant for those who work tirelessly to provide Wikipedia with free graphic files. This work includes:

  • Creating original images: as in creating a new image for Wikipedia, such as a new wiki award, or taking a wiki image, such as a Barnstar and creating something new from it (e.g. adding an original color pattern, or warping the image into something new and different).
  • Creating versions of known designs: as in a graphic file of a country's flag, a medal or other insignia. Because images like these found on the web are often copyrighted, the efforts of a Wikipedian to design a version of the object may be key to our illustrating properly an article.
  • Creating montages: Also important is a user's efforts to "Photoshop" images together, thus creating a more illustrative, or concise, file that will better illustrate an article. This may be done either with drawings or pictures. The images to be used in the montage, however, must be themselves free.

History

The original idea for this award was proposed by Redux on August 15, 2005. All those who participated in the discussion supported the creation of this award, which was designed by Sango123. Fittingly, Sango123 also became the very first recipient of the award. In 2008 it was redesigned by en:User:L'Aquatique and in 2010 by Antonu.
